I've been running a 566 at 850 for about a year and today it kicked the bucket. Intel says they will send me the RMA number. How likely is it that I will actually get a new CPU? There is no obvious evidence I've been overclocking, but can they tell?
unless you did something really dumb like jacked the voltage up really high, I do not think you will have any troubles. I have a Celeron 300a that has run for 3 years at 450 and it is still going strong so you might have killed it with heat. I also have a PIII 750 that runs just fine at 1.0Ghz for over a year now.....
The voltage was at 1.85 but it has been that high the whole time I have run the CPU. Heat was usually around 45 C with the Golden Orb that was on it. In the past it has also been the subject of experiments with Peltiers and stuff, so it's seen everything from -5 C to 55 C. I don't doubt heat may have played a role in its early demise but it's not like I toasted it all at once and it's charred. 😉
Has anyone done an RMA with Intel before? I called this morning and they said they would email me instructions but I haven't received anything. Does it seem to take them a few days to get stuff taken care of?
