RJ45 port and modem

I have just bought a computer which was loaded with Mandrake 9.2 as it OS and has on it an RJ45 port for networking and asdl. My question is this, since the RJ45 port is physically like a winmodem, except it has four additional conectors, what chance have I of using it as a modem for Linux. I suppose what I am asking is "do the two centre connectors on an RJ45 port perform exactly the self same function as the two connectors do on a winmodem?" I suppose I should be kicked up the *** for asking such a silly question. Life is never as simple as that, is it?

i've actually seen a case where a small laptop maker combined the RJ 11 and RJ 45. the RJ 45 would go in,then the RJ 11 would flip over and go in the otherway so the pins were on the top and bottom of the plug. however this would never be done on a desktop.
