My son is moving to a dorm where you need such a cable to hookup to the school network. Does anyone know what is the wiring standard to hookup the RJ-11 side of the ethernet cable ? I need to know which wiring should be connected to which pin.

It depends on the standard.

Generally there is no RJ-11 to RJ-45 "standard". Otherwise it would no longer be a standard. That's like saying what is the standard for standardized apples to standardized oranges?

RJ-11 is not a standard for ethernet. It will work, but I want to strangle the people that did this. Makes me thing you aren't really getting ethernet in the room.

And before anybody pounces - sure the RJ-11 pinout was later included into RJ-45 connector, but that is a hole-nutter thread.

snake253 post what needs to be connected to what, RJ-11 is usually telephone jack and thus has nothing to do with regular Ethernet Network.

Are you sure that a cable is needed and not an ADSL modem. Sounds more like there is an ADSL connection in the dorm.

Yes, it is just a cable. The information for the school says some dorms will require this special cable. I was able to find this cable using a google search, but unfortunately there was no information on the pinout.
