i was wondering what you guys thought about this, i have 7 computers to network though out my house so i can share my DSL connection. i was gunna buy CAT5 and wire my house (about 100feet of cable) but, it is a lil pricey and RJ-11 is pretty cheap. i would still wire the house so to reduce the line nosie. would the speed diff be a big deal? i'm not looking to transfer alot of files just share my broadband.

thoughts? ideas?

Thanks again,

If you're going to wire your house, one of those do once type of things, I'd advise
that you do it right, the first time. That way you don't have to go back at a later
date to rip everything up if you find that the previous configuration didn't meet your
needs.

Really, CAT5 isn't expensive unless you're on a really, really tight budget, but since you
can afford DSL, I assume that you can afford it.

I don't know if this will help in your decision, but Rache is crimping and selling his own CAT5e (custom lengths, too) with profits heading to the Red Cross. His current pricing is $0.12/ft so with shipping, I doubt it would cost more than $20 for the amount you need. And plus, I think CAT5 is a better solution for future compatiblity and in case you ever lose your DSL.

Perhaps I am just misunderstanding you. RJ-11 is a jack or connector, not cable. A cat5 jack would be RJ-45, etc.. Do you mean Cat3?

I think it is safe to assume that he is in fact talking about Cat3, although I already know what happens when you ASS U ME...

I'm glade you said that, because I was about to.

Yes you can use Cat3 instead of Cat5, but why would u want to. You will increase the noise on the line which will cause you to loose conncetion and slow down your network.
If your saying that Cat5 is too expensive, make sure your not looking at Plenium (spelling) wire. That's a speical wire, that runs in Duct work, that won't produce smoke if your house catches fire.
