So I am a F@H nut, and now have 19 video cards folding. Its really important that I get the fan speed set, so the cards don't run so hot. All the tools I have tried won;t control the fans in these cards !!! Can anybody suggest another tool ?

And this is my 10,000th post !

Well if software isn't doing it for you....you can always try editing the BIOS. I've never used the program myself, but it seems pretty straightforward and also allows back up of each existing image. For simplicity and fool-proof application, you may consider removing additional cards in a single system while flashing each card.

If worst comes to worst, open the bios and edit for the new fan speed and reflash it, or power the fan from a PSU plug adapter though with a full 12V they may be pretty loud and short lived fans.

However FWIW, my EVGA card could have it's fan adjusted by their Precision tool until I edited and reflashed the bios, at which point Precision lost the ability to change it - was totally greyed out option after that. I don't recall which bios settings I'd changed now, besides some clock speeds. Edit: Think I also increased fan speed to 40% from 30%, for the o'c I did that was enough to handle full load/gaming but I don't F@H with it.

rivatuner works fine on 8800/9800GT, I've used it on two. Also worked fine on my GTX260 and my old 7600GT. Is it not wokring or do you not know how to work it?

It works on some of my cards, not all. I have tried many different drivers also.

doesn't work on my 8800gs, but i can edit it using nibitor.

Nothing works on most of my 9800GTX+'s and half of my 9800 GT's. I downloaded that nbitor, but it says my fans are running at 100%, but I can;t edit... There is something wierd about these cards.

Do your cards spin up/down on their own?
If they don't I can only assume they are hard wired using a 2 pin fan connector; thus no increasing or decreasing RPM's.

This.

Off the top of my head, I know that was the case with some of the XFX Alpha Dog 8800GTs. The fan is locked at 100% speed.

Nope, I looked, its this card here
And I opened my case to inspect, it has 3. Also, when I first tried nvidia system tools 6.02, it said 43%. I tried to change, and it says "the changes were not saved because they are invalid". Nvidia crap software....I tried 6.03, but its greyed out. rivatuner doesn;t even have the menu its on normally.

?? The card you linked has a 4 pin fan connector, all 4 leads used - Blue, green, yellow & black. 'Tho there's a slight risk, what I'd do is flash the bios from another 9800GT, IF you have a spare PCI video card so that if it doesn't work at all w/new bios, you still have a way to boot to a DOS prompt to reflash the original bios... meaning you'll need to backup that orig. bios first. You might also post the orig. bios somewhere, maybe someone will see something if they take a look at it.

If the fan does only have 3 wires that could also explain it, 4th wire being for PWM speed control. It's possible to change fan speeds without it (generally speaking, electronically), but when a util uses a % method it's usually through the PWM change of the 4th wire.

I really don't want to mess with flashing 19 video cards bios... I just want a tool that works.

Hmmm....I have owned several EVGA cards and installed some for family/friends. Precision Tuner worked on all of them, except when GT200 first came out.

Excuse me. The EVGA cards work with evga precision, EXCEPT the 9800 GTX+ ones.

Sounds like the problem stems from non-reference models. Similar to mobos, I'm guessing they use a different I/O chip. Last try would be SpeedFan for control software. For the EVGA models I'd post on their forums, either the Precision sub-forum or the 9800 series sub-forums. You can also try lobbying for support at Guru3D RT forum, although Unwinder is notorious for his lack of patience regarding incompatibility with his software.

You didn't reply to whether your card has the 4 wires to the plug as pictured, or only 3 for certain. The 4th wire is for the PWM control all the utils showing a % fan speed would use. If yours lacks the 4th wire, in theory it might be possible to solder one on but then you'll have to track down the connector pin too.

It just seems that no matter how much you want a util to do the fan speed changes, it's not going to happen or you'd have already found the way.

Do all the cards that do not respond to fan control have non reference coolers? Or are they all mixed in together. Reference and non reference coolers alike?

I have some Asus "top" 9600GSO cards with non-reference cooling, and I cannot change or control fan speeds either.

does anyone else have some weird graphical glitching when they move around the evga precision tool? like if I just leave it where it is when I open it everything is good, but if I was to move it to the other side of the desktop the screen totally glitches out.

I have 9600GSO's in SLI and I can't get their fan speed to remain at whatever I set them to. Very annoying because I suspect they can clock much higher but the fan on GPU1 always resets to 35% a few minutes after I set it at 70% with precision..

On the 9800 series of cards there is no automatic fan profile, it's all driver controlled.
