RIVA128 Drivers Problems

I'm trying to install the latest drivers for my RIVA128 vid card(Diamond V330 w TV out) on a fresh install of Win98se (French Canadian edition). But, when I install the new drivers, be it those of nVidia or those of Diamond, I get a Windows Protection Error when I reboot. Does somebody have an idea as to what might be causing this strange behavior?

Here are the specs of the system:

Shuttle HOT-557 ver.1.23 mobo (with defective serial port)
Cyrix PR150+ CPU
32Mb EDO-RAM
PCI RIVA128 4Mb (Diamond V330)
PCI Ethernet Adapter (Realtek)
ISA Sound Blaster 16(non-pnp)
ISA Old 486 controler card(with everything disabled but serial port for mouse)
2Gb Maxtor HDD
40x ASUS CD-ROM
Fresh install of Win98se French Canadian
