ok, i just realized my work computer has a riva tnt card in it with a p3 550 cpu. if i install CS on it... what kinda performance am i looking at here? will it be playable at 800x600? or even 640x480? it'd be cool if i get decent fps... your thoughts?

Actually the TNT was not a bad card for it's time. My brother still uses one with his PIII500. With the latest drivers, you can problably get by at 800x600. CS is a more CPU dependent game anyways.

I played CS with one in my old PC using 1024x768x32bit at 30-40fps. Now I can play at 500fps with a Ti4600!

<< as long as it's not a piece of crap ATI >>

way to show your intelligence

most people would prefer a rage 128 to a riva tnt for numerous reasons.

I second that, AAO. The Rage Fury Pro in my K6-III 450 was the sheeeit in it's day. The TNT card would always cause lockups and crashes.

Spanky, It will work but as both Rage and TNT2 both are software T&L they require CPU to make the card work good, If your games or productivity software is very intensive you will get major slowdowns during graphic intensive parts.
A good Idea might be to look into a Cheap Gforce2 or ATI 7500 or better if you can afford it to take the strain off the CPU.
Ive found that Software T&L GFX cards tend to really start showing there potential with cpu's higher then 900Mhz but soon top out at 1.2Ghz.
Im using a Asus 3800D TnT2 Ultra, I can just get a score of 2000 in 3Dmark2k1se and it holds if frame rates well in all games, It doesnt get all the cool fog or some other texture details but its tolerable for me on my 1.4TBird.

Lorne: thanx for the info. i would have no problem sticking in a spare v5 i have laying around, but as i said before, its a machine i use at work. so if that old riva tnt card can handle CS and playable fps (around 30) at 800x600... or even 640x480... i'll be a happy camper... err... i mean worker. :D

I still have a TNT in one of my older computer, 450 PII, CS is very playable at 800x600x16 on it.

I have a Riva TNT right now, running on this PC. And I think it sucks now. I was running on 1280x1024x32 and was running great for AoE. Now it keeps crashing my programs. Sucks ass, IMO.

it should run OK at 640x480..

a voodoo2 (which the TNT had similar performance to) runs CS ok at 800x600 as long as there isn't too many players on screen and lag grenades everywhere..

you should be able to play anything on a TNT in 640x480 res with a reasonable amount of smoothness.

if you put a fan on it, they overclock very well too ;)

I remember playing HL with my TNT card @1028x768,only had a CEL-333 then, some members here are not answering your question but I would say you should find it playable for CS at those res you meantioned.

For comprisons sake, my Father plays Fifa2001 (football game) on an Nvidia TNT at 1024x768x32 without any hint of slowdown. He does have a 1GHZ Duron though.

I used to have a Diamond Viper v550 (tnt first generation) running on my p2 400, and it ran at 1024x768x16 just fine. Be aware that a decent amount of ram can also help performance in CS, especially at the lower amounts.

I put a cpu fan from a 486 on mine and it overclocked quite well, I held it on with detal floss if I remember right ! Half life ran fine at 800x600 on that k63 400. My mother has that computer now and it still runs fine overclocked.

It won't matter if the software doesn't recognize and know how to use the onboard T&L unit of a GeForce or Radeon card. And since Counter Strike is based on the old Quake2 engine, I can almost guarantee it won't use onboard T&L. With that said, the RivaTNT is still a decent card, definitely enough to play CS at 30+ fps at 640x480 and possibly 800x600. I have a craptacular s3 Savage3D card on my p3 450 at work and it can run CS at 640x480 at about 25 - 30 fps, a bit choppy but still very playable. All my co-workers who opted for a laptop instead of a desktop are jealous I can even run CS with hardware acceleration at all, lol.

I had one in my first and last DELL system. Got it when the P3s first came out(1998). Had P3-500 and 16MB STB Velocity 4400. I had the best rig in town for about 3months and I didn't replace the STB untill Dec 2000 when I bought a 64MB DDr Radeon. Man STB kicked ass, I wish they were still around.
