Risks of using ATA Raid (Promise / HighPoint)???

What are some risks of using ATA Raid like Promise or HighPoint? I've heard that with Promise, the drive information is stored on the card, so if the card messes up, you would have to reformat your drive with a new card. Is that true?

And if you are striping data across both drives and one fails, ...

On the other hand, 3ware's low-end card sells for $130. Only ATA-66 tho.
