Risen...how does it compare?

So there has been a lot of discussion on here of late about various RPGs, mostly Dragon Age: Origins, DA 2, Elder Scrolls games, Two Worlds II, Mass Effect, ME 2, even KotOR and the Gothic series.

I have Risen unopened on my shelf which I got as a gift for Christmas, and I'm wondering if its worth my time. I've heard it's superior to the latest Gothic game, but aside from that, not much else.

Would love to hear from anybody who has played it and what your thoughts are.

It's sort of a modern remake of the first Gothic: 3rd person presentation, three camps (factions), enclosed setting (a small island rather than a prison colony), low-key hero etc.

I'm a huge Gothic fan, and I mostly enjoyed it. I only played as a sword&shield melee; cover plays a huge role in tough battles. The combat never struck me as overly tedious (no pun intended).

Some transitions seemed a little abrupt, and the story was so generic I barely remember it. But the presentation is good, and it keeps you involved.

If you like RPGs I'm sure you'll be fine with it.

It was decent, but I quit after about 15 hours due to boredom. Maybe it's just me but the combat never got better, it still felt super clunky and just not very intuitive even as the game progressed and you gained skills. I did like many aspects of the game though, it's certainly not terrible.

It's the "real" Gothic 4 and superior to the fake one taking its name. Melee combat seems clunky at first, but I thought it became quite enjoyable after leveling up and learning some more moves. The exploration in the game is very good.
