Empire Earth II had some great ideas, but the game is shit.

Rise of Nations had some great ideas, and the game is great.

Wish they'd make a RoN II. The Rise of Mythology was not very good.

Never played that.
I did play Age of Mythology a lot. In fact too much. Got bored and dug up a used copy of RON on amazon recently to cure my boredom. Was worth it.

EE2 is OK but just didnt excite me. its like a 3D RON, if fact I'm surprised they didnt get sued. It does have one new feature, which is coordinating war plans with your allies. But its hard to use.

never played EE II, but RoN was phenomenal. Can't believe that design only survived the one game.

Also, I loved Age of Mythology as well. good stuff.

They did, called Rise of Legends. Wasn't a bad game but I felt it strayed too much from the original. I liked playing as real civilizations as opposed to the steampunk fantasy. Microsoft really needs to make RoN III.

Sadly those days are over.... almost. Kickstarter is the only hope for classic RTS games now.

I agree, Rise of Nations kept a friend and I busy for hundreds of hours. The game seemed like a perfect RTS with no flaws to speak of. It was fast, you could play out full blown battles in an hour and it felt complete. The AI was reasonably well equipped to hand you your ass as well 🙂

If you do get it it's well worth getting the Thrones and Patriots expansion if it doesn't already come with it.

Rise of Nations is a classic, I hope you won't burn me on a stake if I say that RoN had some features that AoE lacked in my opinion (more ages, more interesting upgrades and gathering of resources and most importantly the whole world and the conquest mode).

I never played EE but RoN was AWESOME.. It was my most favorite RTS since Warcraft II... Sigh.. I miss those games

I got RoN T&P for $20 about 6-7 years ago. Best money I have ever spent on a game. IMO it's one of the top 3 RTS games of all time.

I am now conquering the world. As a Turk.
I get free siege, range and sight bonus to siege, and towns capture 3 times as fast. Thats way better for quickly overrunning the enemy in campaigns, cuz they build towns as soon as you destroy them.
Oh, and military research is cheaper, and citizens are cheaper, which is nice but not essential.
Its possible they are the best at rushing, because getting siege requires two upgrades.

I really preferred the Japanese, Germans and British for single player games, their economic power is great. Especially the Brits which make ridiculous amounts of gold, which you could use to buy other resources if you had to. They are pretty great in a 3v3 or 4v4 online situation too, so long as your allies can protect you.

If you play online I'd go with Americans, who I think gain a large knowledge increase, or some sort of buff to their universities. I was always bottlenecked by knowledge late game.

Do people still play RON multiplayer?

Barely. I stopped playing a bout 2 years ago and I think it has ~100 players online at any time. Finding a game isn't hard, the stupid part is dealing with GameSpy since all the matchmaking is done by that.

Yeah that last techs require something like 1200, 1500, 1800 and 1600 knowledge. You'll be waiting forever even with a bunch of towns full of universities.

Doh, yeah, I meant Rise of Legends, not mythology. That's what happens when you try to reply while working 12hr days.

Pretty sure Rise of Nations is on GameRanger which my friends and I use to still play Age of Empires II multiplayer. Not sure how many people actually play though.

I wish Rise of Nations would get on steam. I would buy that in a second. I know I can get it with out steam but I want all my games in one big list in case my PC dies or I need to update I can easily just download them from my nice list. I bought Rise of Nations when it came out but the disk got toasted and would not install the last time I tried.
