RIS and XP Images

I am using RIS in a beta environment trying to deploy XP Pro. Here's my dilemma and what I have done so far:
1 Installed Win2k, SPs, hotfixes, windows update, etc and an slave IDE drive for RIS alone
2 Risetup, XP pro disk for initail image
3 Found necessary patches after it failed and applied
4 Installed from initial image, applied hotfixes, added apps and settings
5 ran Riprep which failed, found a fix (replace ntoskrnl.exe in initial image with current version on new system)
6 ran Riprep again, this time it worked.
7 My RIS server started hanging and dying horiribly after a few installs and then I could no longer install over the LAN
8 restored System State a few times, worked on and off, died again. Made it worse.
9 Decided to reinstall Win2k from scratch

This time before I install RIS and give it the XP Pro CD image again, I'd like some pointers.
Is there any way for me to slipstream the hotfixes into the i386 folder so my base image has a correct starting point?
Is there another way to approach this so I don't run into these wierd problems?
I am open to any suggestions and appreciate your time.
