ripping tv show dvds

I am wondering what is the best software to rip tv show dvds to a macbook pro. I want to upload all my dvds and put them on my ipod but i dont know how to do it by episode instead of all of the together. Any suggestions?

Handbrake. Insert disk, select the iPod preset, choose the chapter you want, select where you want it go, and then hit start.

You can queue up multiple encodes, and it will just keep going until it is all done. But it will only do one disk at a time, unless you pre-rip the disks in ISO format and save them to your hard drive.

I always use handbrake for that but for some reason when i try and do the chapters it converts in a way that it will only open up through the vlc player

Actually you don't need to rip to ISO to do multiple discs - Handbrake will rip from plain VIDEO_TS folders just fine.

Why didn't I remember that last week when I was ripping 3 seasons worth of TV shows?

I use handbrake and it works fine. A word of caution though (That I learned the hard way). A lot of times episdes on the disc don't follow title order. So ep1 on the disc might be title 1, but ep2 might be title 4 with ep3 being title 2.

Fire up the dvd and check the title order before you rip.

I think the iPod preset is lowest common denominator (but okay for SD content). I'd recommend Universal unless you actually have an iPod 5G. It's important to boost the DRC level in the Audio settings to raise the soundtrack volume, otherwise dialog will likely be too soft. One nice thing about VLC is you can raise the volume pretty sharply to compensate.

The speakers on my old MBP are pretty underwhelming, and I've been tempted to raise the volume even further using AACGain. But I've never gotten around to de-muxing & re-muxing the audio, since Handbrake is pretty close to 1-click once you use it enough times. The Handbrake forums are somewhat useful, and so is the user guide.
