I used to be able to rip cd to vbr and flac without much trouble. Over the past few days though I've gone through many different programs and followed plenty of guides exactly and I can't get anything to rip correctly. How has ripping to VBR and FLAC gotten so much more complicated in the past 5 years? :( - How do you do such tasks? Nothing I do works anymore. Like I said followed many guides step for step, exactly.

EAC is what i've been using mostly. Always end up with a bunch of wav files instead of flac though, or wav files along with some weird flac files that are all different in length than the wav files.

Bleh I'll see if i can find another guide.

Sounds like you're ripping just fine. Your problem is transcoding.

I recently restored an image, and mistakenly thought that I already had options set correctly in EAC...after clicking the MP3 button on several rips, I found that I, too, only had WAV files. I needed to correct my options settings for the encoder (in my situation, LAME).

I'm guessing that because you're using two different encoders, you need to reconfigure your options settings each time you switch. The easiest way I suppose would be to run the Configuration Wizard in EAC each time you switch encoders, the verify settings in the Encoder options tab.

On a related note, what happened to dBPoweramp? I used that for years and years from when they had a free version. I recently reinstalled, discovered I couldn't find the installer anymore, and then found out you have to pay for it now, or make do with a 21-day trial.

more like why hasn't someone else created a more user friendly alternative to give them more competition? :p

its hard to beat dBpoweramp's combination of ease/speed/accuracy/features

I ended up getting it working. I think I just missed one little detail. The first track didn't work at first but I re-did that one and all is well now. FLAC ATTACK

I need to re-rip the CD into MP3 (preferably with LAME VBR, or lame.exe which I can't seem to find) so I can put it on an Ipod.

What's an easy way to rip the tracks to justMP3? I don't know why I'm so bad at this. EAC is overly confusing for starters.
