Ripping JUST the audio off a DVD?

Being thoroughly unhappy with the commercial version of the Pee Wee's Big Adventure soundtrack, I want to rip the audio track directly off of the DVD, and ultimately put it onto a CD (the DVD has a special audio-only track with commentary by the composer). I don't have a DVD player in my computer, so I initially thought that I could just hook my DVD player to my audio-inputs and record it with software. Now I'm thinking that I want high quality sound, so I'll probably buy a drive.

So I know that many people rip DVD's to DIVX and whatnot, but is there any software to do just the audio track? Another concern is that the audio only track is in 5.1, but I would want it in regular stereo so that I can play it on any system. Can this be done?

I know the audio can be ripped directly off of the dvd. As for ripping it into regular stereo, I'm not sure. I can't remember the name of the program that will do the audio ripping, but I can check. You'll find it somewhere on VCD Help.

There may be an easier way, but you could rip all the vob files off of the dvd then use TMPGEnc to encode only the audio.

I've used a shareware prog called Goldwave to capture it as a WAV, controls are a bit confusing at first but it has great editing and equalization. Make sure you set the recording time to 2 hours if you're doing a live concert so it doesn't get cut short! Also make sure you have plenty of disk space.

I downloaded this and it works great...only problem is it rips the audio based on vob files, and I wanted to rip it by chapters. Is there any easy way to do that?

hmmm...haven't played with it myself...but if that's the case....Just rip each chapter into a separate folder. Use dvddecrypter...should work.

what are .vob files?

ripping by chapter doesn't seem like the greatest idea, since some songs may very well carry over between chapters, even if it is just the trailing edge of the song. i wouldn't want to sit there and cut and splice those back together if i didn't have to.

If you want to rip dvds (even if only for audio) I suggest your read up on the very basics of dvd. Check out beginner guides over yonder at doom9.org

You wouldn't have to splice them...just play them in succession. The reason I want chapters is so I can skip around on the disc-otherwise it's just one long track.
