Ripping DVD's/Viewing on TV/Software q's

I would like to rip my DVD movies and videos to my Linkstation. Then view them on my buffalo mediaserver. What is a good software for ripping them quickly, and what might be the preferred file format? Mpeg4/AVI/WMV?
