What's the easiest way to rip audio from an MKV file? I got a big mkv file that's over 2 hours and I want to rip a small portion (3 minutes or so) to MP3 or any audio format. Normally Virtual Dub is my go-to program for that kind of stuff but it's not compatible with MKV files.

Thanks!

I haven't tried it on an MKV file yet, but Pazera Free Audio Extractor has worked great for every other video file I've thrown at it so far. I dunno if you can select the range for just the 3 minutes you want, but if you can't you can afterwards select and delete the unwanted audio w/ Audacity (also free)

You should be able to do it with avidemux. I use it to split audio from YouTube videos. You should be able to cut the audio in there also, but it isn't something I've done. I usually use audacity.

You can split it with mmg (mkvmergegui, part of mkvtoolnix) then extract the audio from the resulting mkv(s) (which should avoid any audio reencoding). I'm not sure if you could skip splitting it and just extract the audio for the specific section you want.

ended up using Xmedia Recode, which I was able to use successfully, so it must be pretty easy to use if I can do it :) - Thanks for the suggestions.

oh i guess my reply is a little bit late, but i am using audials moviebox for such things. it's a video recorder and converter and the process is very simple, you can basically convert your video to an audio format and you got your file. i generally just use it for youtube videos but i reckon it works with pretty much anything, you can check it out here.
