Ripped DVDs and Stretching in WMC

In the process of converting my DVD collection to digital. Everything is fine and dandy except that when I'm doing playback from the digitalized form, WMC stretches the picture vertically to fit, maintaining the same horizontal size. Obviously, this creates distortions that are annoying. DVD playback maintains the non-distorted letterbox.

It's a straight vob rip, full file size, I only buy widescreen formats (and I've tested several ripped movies). I'm guessing it's because it knows to letterbox the DVD, but wants to fit the vob dimensions to fill the screen (37" 1080P). Anyone have a solution?
 
Do you have the Zoom setting wrong in WMC?

While playing back a DVD, press the left/right buttons on the remote (or right click with a mouse) and scroll over to Zoom.

Zoom 1 should leave the aspect ratio as is.
