What does ol Billy boy do with all these ripped copies of XP...or trying to do?
I mean, its availability is crazy....always wondered how they deal with this.

He puts in place a GUID-based system for identifying copies of Windows and then validating them whenever they touch Microsoft looking for support. Initially he does not do anything about pirated copies, but just collects serial numbers. Later, your water and electric service are discontinued, and nobody knows why.

They probably have their lawyers send letters to those sites that have it that are in countries that are supposed to honor copyrights and whatnot.

He doesn't care that much. You're still part of his fiefdom. Better Windows illegally than someone else's OS, eh? ;)

It's been out for nearly 5 years, and you still haven't heard of Windows Product Activation? Jesus.

Other than that, there's some Windows Genuine thing that checks if you have a valid copy, but it's pretty useless from what I see.

Microsoft only takes action if it's a distibutor of illegal copies, the average person doesn't have anything to worry about.

i've been using xp for close to 4 years, i have never activated it and I have installed xp about 25 times (switching computers, mobos and other stuff)

almost everyone that doesn't pay for xp uses the corporate edition, activation is dumb when it only pisses actual customers

actually i had to re-install xp once due to activation, i used the sp2 beta (which ended up being the final build 2600) for 6 months, the beta stops working after 6 months

eh, if you are using corp edition, then you are not an "actual customer", you are an "actual pirate" Arrgghh Matey.

I have never seen an activation problem that acall to MS activation center didn't fix (of course I use all legit copies, maybe that is the difference)

but the point is that the people who don't pay for xp uses the corporate edition so activation is essentially useless

i could get a discounted version from the university

Activation or no, discount or no, you're still a serf, feal to the Estate of Gates. And thus, ultimately, he doesn't care.

Depends who you get when you call and how good your story is. I had a guy tell me I couldn't reactivate after installing a new MB because "the software is tied to the computer, and the motherboard is the main part of the computer". I hung up on him.

I believe there is another way that basicaly extends the activation grace period indefinatly.
