Well I just wanted to confess to you all that I killed my Athlon 1.4 this weekend. I bought a new Alpha HSF and did not install it properly and it fried my CPU. I have now joined an unlucky group of people that I used to read about in these forums. Now I am one of them. I am here for my public flogging.

Moment of silence please for the deceased T-bird............

Being an idiot and trying to put this thing in at 1:30am, I used the wrong washers. It comes with 2 kinds, flat washers and then washers made for bigger holes and has a kinda notch in it. I used the one for bigger holes and well I have smaller holes. So I did not have proper contact with the base of the HS and the slug. So it caused just enough heat to fry my little baby!

Well upon further review, it may not be fried after all. The problem seems to be with the motherboard. One of the nuts that go on the back of the board appears to have ripped of some component when I was tightening down the HS. Still a bad move but maybe not as bad as first thought. I will be testing the chip later today to verify.
