RIP Smally (feline)

On our first day in our new house, we found Smally dumped in the desert as a six week old kitten. She was sitting under a prickly pear cactus screaming her head off. Her dead mother was left in a box nearby. We brought Smally home, pulled out the spines, and she's been with us for over eighteen years. She's been a happy kitty ever since. When she was a kitten, she didn't have the attention span to eat so we would sit on the floor a toss kibbles for her to chase, making eating a game. She also put everything in her mouth including pins and needles so we had to kitten-proof the house.

Tabby was Smally's main squeeze. He was several years older than her and basically raised her. They were a pair until Tabby died a few ago at age ~22 years.

In the past couple years she became one of those bag-of-bones old lady cats that just kept going. She started to crash on Saturday and died yesterday. A pretty good run for thrown away cat.

Sigh, that's one thing I don't miss about having cats -- losing them.

We had outdoor cats when I was growing up, and I thought the normal lifespan for a kitty was 3-4 years.

Awwww 🙁 Sorry about your kitty. We have 3 that are 5 years old right now and I do not even want to think of how hard it's going to be when they're gone. One of them actually sounds like your Smelly. She's also a tabby and we actually jokingly call her "the happy one" because she's always quick to roll and purr asking you to pet her, she's also super hyper and she often runs away from her food because she heard something in the other room and then the other cats finish her food while she investigates.

Sorry to hear that, i know when mine pass i will be devastated you just get so attached to these little buggers.

RIP Smally (and Tabby too!).

It feels weird "liking" these threads but we like them becasue they are success stories.

My condolences. We have two cats we got from a friend of my son who was going to release them as tiny kittens into the forest. Just dont understand how someone can do that. At least your rescue survived and had a long happy life.

I feel for you. 🙁

We just put down our 15 year old grandma kitty Belle.

She was really good with our kids. She liked sitting on their beds when we read them bed time stories.

Sorry to hear about your loss but know this, you snatched that kitten from the sure jaws of an early death and gave her a life of love and attention, she died a happy kitty.

So sorry to hear about your babygirl. Similar story. Raised my babygirl from a week old as a rescue after her mother took off with the rest of the litter. Fuzzball ran away last November after 9 years. I know how hard this is.
