It's a Saab story. Based on the horror stories of people I know that owned Saabs, it was inevitable.

It pisses me off that the Koenigsegg deal fell through. Saab back in full control of a performance-minded Swedish innovator? That would have been sweeeet. Now it's just fail.

I'm more sad to see the Pontiac brand die. They didn't make many good cars but the brand was an American icon.

BTW, could GM "relaunch" any of these brands in 10 years or whatever? It seems like this could be a good way to remarket niche brands.

good, gm had too many brands making bland cars. it was diluting their resources, make a few good cars, not a buncha sh*t ones. saab lost all meaning, for a while they were associated with saab jet fighters, but even that lost its shine.

True, but I really doubt Koenigsegg would have kept them as just a mere dumpy GM outlier brand. I was really excited to see Saab reborn as an independent performance auto company.

Grew up in and around SAAB 99's and 900's, fixing them as a side job got my family through harder times and (literally) paid for our lake house in good ones. I have an emotional attachment to the cars, mostly the older models in the years before and just after GM came into the picture, 1993 iirc.

I'm 23 now and have personally had 17 different 900's on the road, mostly turbos. Buy, fix, sell and repeat. I think I will probably always own one at all times, in some form of completion. Don't expect anyone to understand, you're either a SAAB person or you're not it is a loyal crowd. I think that is the most attractive part, they are underrated performers, turbo 900's were hot cars and I just sold a 1993 9000 aero, paid $1500 for a european 4-door family saloon with a 230hp turbocharged 4cyl that got 32mpg, had powered and heated leather recaro racing seats, traction, abs, moon roof, climate control standard! find me that in a sub $2k used car.

My fav: 86-92 900spg

My most recent: 9000aero, sleeper saloon

Someone will pick them up, I am fairly confident. I don't think SAAB as a brand will die. Even so, cars like the above will always have a following.

Cheers to my SAAB people

Sorry but who is going to pick them up? They sell very few cars. No one wants them or they would be buying right not for a bargain basement price.

Down the road, someone will revive the name. Not saying as a high volume commercial car but MG badges are still being put on cars. I would not be surprised to see even a single model run from a private company at some point, just saying the NAME is not dead.

Saab consistently produced some of the ugliest cars on the road. I understand Saab was also a great innovator but ugly is ugly and since I never drove one I have to go with what I could see which was ugly.

GM screws up yet another historic car maker!

Ahh maybe you should read about them. GM kept them alive much longer they would have been on their own. Also their relability went up after GM bought them.

I had a 900SE turbo Saab. Great car to dive but like most european cars will nickle and dime you. Being a former auto tech I could do most of the work but even then the fun factor runs out when it needs a lot of little things.

Good riddance. I don't even know a single person who currently owns or has ever owned a Saab. I can't even recall the last time I saw a Saab on the road. They will not be missed by 99% of Americans, I assure you.

And oddly enough, I wouldn't miss 99% of Americans :awe:

Opps, spilled coffee. Now I need a new ignition. Wow, brilliant.
