Rip off UK prices

I see a lot of you get cards from new egg, i saw a refurbished 6800GT 256mb card for around $214 dollars.

Here in the UK, a 6800GT is around $400 in USD, and thats at a good store.

Is it possible for me to import a refurbed card from the US and use it in my UK computer, or do the components have some kind of region thing like DVD?

A 7800GTX is around $750 here.

$200 is around the best price for a 6600GT brand new.

From what i understand, the higher prices are a result of taxes and costs of shipping them overseas.

That being said, if you have a friend in the states to "export" you a card, im not sure of the legal requirements for moving the electronics into/out of the UK.

My GF4 Ti4400 (~$160 USD) got through customs fine, no charges. My granda even declared it as a gift to customs as he came through.

Most of my DVD's and PC stuff from Sidewinder Computers have escaped duties and VAT apart from 1.

Apparently anything more than ~£24 is supposed to have VAT/Duty charged on it.

I cant make head nor tail of what happens in all honesty. I just count myself lucky to have avoided being charged on all bar 1 occaision.

You will need to pay for shipping, VAT and customs, it eats up most of the savings unfortunately. Another aspect is guarantee, which might turn out to be pretty cumbersome and expensive.

I do it all time, get a friend to send it as a gift and mark value at £40 at very most ( your taking a risk if a £400 GPU gets lost or damaged).

You wont pay the UK technology tax on it.

A few months ago i was getting nearly $2US for £1 but the pound sterling took a hit as of london bombings its around $1.70 for £1 now.

It was legal in Nazi Germany to slaughter innocent jews. What's legal is not necessarily what's right.

biostud. who cares if its ilegal so is you using warez same as rest of us.

Dman877, That was a dumb statement that belongs on some sh1tty polital forum not a hardware one thanks.

Fact is we get ripped of in UK so i do what i can to lessen this, i pay tax every week on my wages.

Shipping costs are a bit much for me, you could consider yourself lucky to pay only $750 for a 7800GTX. Due to shipping and tax it costs about $1100 for one over here in South Africa.

A 7800GTX is around $600 Here
Given current exchange rates the price isn't as bad as it was a couple of weeks ago compared to US prices.

Dman877, WHERE in my posts did i tell you to "GET LOST" or agree with you, you werent the topic poster. 🙂

You are inventing untrue statements.

Blind obediance to "law" isn't always a good thing. (This was the point of the Hitler reference)

It would seem that you agree with me when you say to hell with it, the tax laws in the UK suck.

That seems to be the equivalent of "get lost" does it not?

He may have agreed with your general point, as I do, but your comparison was idiotic at best.

Well I could have used the example of how our tax dollars in the west are used to stifle the developing world and maintain the dominance of multi-national corporate interests but people don't seem to understand much about our contemporary political economy so I used an example anyone can understand.

Please explain why using Nazi Germany to demonstrate that laws and norms, in and of themselves, are not worth blindly following, is "idiotic"

1. I was just pointing out that it was illegal
2. Don't fvcking give me a lection about right and wrong, as you clearly do not understand how a society works. Avoiding to pay tax will result in closing of hospitals and schools resulting in costs of life and degrading the society until it's nothing more than a swamp. So you think it's better to let people die so he can get a cheaper videocard. So the higher tax pay for lot of other stuff you need to pay for in US. That's just as valid statement as your nazi reference.

Yes, I also sometimes do illegal things, and feel good when doing them, as a small part of "freedom". So I'm not on a moral crusade, just trying to inform that he might get a fine for what he thinks of doing, that's all.

This thread has tuned into the normal joke.

If i or anyone want to get goods sent from abroad to their country and they are lucky enough to avoid a ripof tax good on them, i pay my way in my wages every week so i do my share on tax.
