We had a good run you and I did. Killed our fair share of German soldiers too. But alas, the years have taken their toll on your scroll wheel, and it is time to let you move on the the big hardware box in the closet.

You will be missed. :'(

Your cousin the G400 does look snazzy in his all black duds though.

Your scroll wheel is fine. Take the mouse apart and clean it. I've been clinging to an MX518 for like eight years.

There is a little LED emitter and reciever, with the mouse wheel in the middle. Between the little axle it rides on and the outside rubber, there are little 'spokes' that break the beam.

When it all gets clogged up with dust/hair/semen/whatever, the scrolling gets erratic and then finally stops. Three phillips screws in the bottom of the mouse, behind the labels, and the top comes off.

I don't know what I would do if mine broke on me. I'm really picky about my mouse, lucky my mx isn't showing any signs of dieing/wear.
 
My mx-518 developed an intermittent ground fault from many years of use because the wire was frayed right where it enters the mouse. I took it apart, chopped off about 2 inches and resoldered it onto the board. Been working flawlessly ever since.

I have no idea how old mine is. I think it was manufactured when the universe was 10^-23 seconds old. I bought it a few picoseconds after that.

I can't believe they're still making it. Or were until recently. It came out in like...'04 maybe?

But hells yeah, when good things die, you fix that shit. Just like my parents taught me with my pet hamster. He came back to life like seven times.
 
I'm still using my mx518. It had replaced a mx510 which looks identical to it so I've been using that type of mouse for a decade now. I've got new Teflon pads for it because my mouse pads wore it out and the paint on the Logitech logo is chipping off.

I haven't even put feet on mine. I'm missing the random middle one, but the ones at the edges are still decent. I just scrape them off with my fingernail every once in a while.

Also a layer of the rubber on the sides started kinda peeling off, then it started absorbing a lot of skin oils, and now smooth and shiny but somehow still kinda rubbery.

...a mouse needs character.
 
I held on to my 518's as long as I could but finally went with a G500 and never looked back...an awesome improvement.
 
i had to clean out my mx518 after the scroll wheel went nutty. the G400 i had bought to replace it needs to go to logitech due to funky tracking
 
I also fear when my mx laser 20x dies for other then short battery lifespan after all the use it has given it's still kicking.
 
I just recently had to clean the scroll wheel on my MX518 also. I guess I shed a lot or something, it was full of hair 😵
 
last week, I opened up my MX518, cleaned all the nasty insides, *and* removed the springs from the scroll wheel so now I get smooth scrolling without clicks!.... awwww... nerdgasm!
 
I used the MX510 for quite a few years before I got what I'm currently using, a G9X.

Posting in an 'MX518 Appreciation thread'. I just can't imagine gaming without it. I pulled its predecessor, an MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, from the retired hardware shelf yesterday to use on a customer PC while working on it.
 
My MX 500 is still going relatively strong, except for some left-click issues.
That's why at home I replaced it with a G400, and am using it at work instead.
Might have to open her up and see if there's any gunk blocking the action, or if the clicker is worn out.
If it's a clicker, I guess it's just a matter of soldering on a new one in place of the old one..
