Yeah, I'd never heard of him either, but the dude had GAME! He wrote "Time Is On My Side." You may have heard the Stones' version.
He also wrote four of Janis Jopin's best songs ever -- "Piece of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Get It While You Can", and "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)".
He wrote them all originally for lesser known black singers and groups.
Other songs of his were recorded by Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Miriam Makeba, Dusty Springfield, Irma Thomas . . . even Fabian (snicker.)
He wrote this one, and this one, too.
All in all, pretty damn good for a Philly born and raised Jewish guy who started out as a music buyer for an appliance store in a black neighborhood that happened to have a small music department on hte side.
Lol, here's a minor song he wrote for an even more minor group but that I keenly remember from WAY back in my pre-teen days, before the Stones and Beatles had ever even landed on our shores.
Dead at the senseless age of 80, here's to YOU, Jerry Ragovoy, one prime exemplar of down home, real roots, rockin' Philly soul.
