One of the very specific reasons I don't have a Tesla is because it doesn't have Carplay. I use Carplay extensively on my current Ford:

Granted, this only applies to future EV's, not ICE vehicles, and not previous GM EV's. I understand why they're doing it (money from future subscriptions), but wow...what a way to hand the market space to your competition! Although Apple IS the competition at this point:

i can't wait to see how this pans out. Foolish as I am, I thought Carplay was in Tesla vehicles. I really need to play with a Tesla product.

seems like a bad idea. the in-car systems are always worse than a phone. just take advantage of the technology everyone has. jesus
Sort of agree. Keep the car doing the car stuff, I don't need the car handing over control of car systems (like the AC) to the phone.
But I'd much rather use my phone for navigation, music and calls.

For Carplay, you get Google Maps with live traffic & pretty accurate maps, you get Waze, you get Spotify, Audible, Siri, etc. I sit in traffic a lot & that stuff gets me THROUGH lol!

Tesla has their own infotainment system, which they charge monthly or annually for. In their case, I agree with their annual charge, because it offers a lot of value:

Unlike BMW charging for heated seats, which already come with your car & don't require servers & programmers & data connection to both operate & add value to your experience:

I like Carplay because it offers a standard interface, it's easy to use (big buttons), and it's free, based on what I already have on my iPhone. My Spotify playlists are there, my podcasts are there, my audiobooks are there, my GPS systems are there...plug & play, DONE!

I do wish Tesla would incorporate Carplay into their vehicles. You can get by with their setup, as it's more advanced than other automotive infotainment systems (plus it has karaoke, which is awesome! lol), plus the GPS is very tightly integrated with their self-driving system, but I'm already used to Carplay, it's a good system, and I don't want to change lol.

My wife's Subaru has one of the lamest infotainment systems I've ever seen. She traded in her Forester for a newer one a couple years ago specifically to get Carplay (and the newer LKAS system...went from lane-assist aka pinballing to auto-centering, which is almost as good as self-driving with the EyeSight TACC system!).

She won't ever get a car without Carplay again.

I use CarPlay basically every time I'm in my car. If a manufacturer says they won't have it then I won't be considering their products unless there is a very good 3rd party solution available.

I just use a phone for navigation, and a business card holder to hold it up at an angle. I have Android Auto on a Mazda CX5 but it's clunky to set up every time and I find it quicker to just use the phone. I would use it more if it was integrated into the car's HUD like the built-in navigation system, but it isn't.

For those of us who store music on devices and no interest in subscription music services, are we screwed?

No, pretty much all cars come with Bluetooth audio as standard & they sell Minijack to Bluetooth adapters for older devices that can't wirelessly stream.

What do you get in the vehicle, if you decide not to pay for their infotainment system? Anything???

You get:

1. Basic navigation
2. Bluetooth streaming
3. Vehicle touchscreen controls & settings

The Premium connectivity service is like $10/mo or $100/year if you want to pay ahead & save a few bucks. You get stuff like live traffic, satellite maps, an Internet browser with Internet connectivity, dashcam with live remote view, etc. So you're basically paying for monthly cellular connectivity with some really nice bonus features, which is really what the entire car is designed around:

1. Electric
2. Self-driving
3. Premium touchscreen features (including karaoke, which is super fun!)

The additional subscription cost is annoying, but you're saving money on gas by using electricity at a discount, so it sort of all works out in the end (minus the huge cost of the car payment LOL). I view this type of subscription as valid because of the type of car it is (basically a rolling smartphone) & the features you get (self-driving integration, if purchased, plus all of the stuff that the cellular connection gets you), as opposed to paying for heated seats in the BMW, as if they were some kind of IRL DLC lol.

Ok, I guess I will have to pay up. As you say, it's not as bad as BMW. Not yet anyway...

Oh wow, I just looked at that page, they are now expiring standard connectivity after 8 years for vehicles purchased after 6/20/22. I would be curious to see what happens as the FAQ is super vague. No more map updates? Will OTA software updates be disabled? No more navigation at all?
