he most likely ment the timer is fubard when playing vbr. even my iriver 250 does this. how ever these players have been able to play VBR fine since the original rio 300, so I kinda doubt this player has any problems with it.

Yep, it's a quirk with the TI chipset SonicBlue uses. My 300 did the exact same thing.

I have a RIOVolt, but I can't remember what series. It works great on all my VBR Mp3s. The cool thing is that you can update the firmware as well. The only problem I had was with 700 MB CDs filled past 650 MB. I bet new firmware will fix that (I haven't updated in over a year). Great player for a great price!

I hope so, a lot of 700MB cd's out there, and I usually fill them up all the way. Don't see the rebates anymore, guess this is dead?

I will probably check out the $20 player at JCPenney, it does ID3 tags AND has a line out to hook up to a stereo or whatever--not bad for 20 bucks. (supposedly the build quality is actually quite decent, too).

Plus you can get one with a funky lime green faceplate.
