With condemnations of the pope still in full force, what is your opinion?
Do you think we'll have some riots tomorrow?

Even several days after the fact, and after an apology, the rehtoric is still strong, e.g. a meeting of 1,000 clerics and religious scholars in Pakistan have issued a statement calling for the pope to be replaced, as well as saying that the "pope, and all infidels, should know that no Muslim, under any circumstances, can tolerate an insult to the Prophet (Muhammad). ... If the West does not change its stance regarding Islam, it will face severe consequences".

Personally, I think the clerics will put quite a show tomorrow, and we'll probably have a few burnt Churches, maybe and embassy or two, as well as some dead. I'll be surprised if tomorrow will be uneventful (in comparison to the usual stuff).

Because that's when they get togather for the Jumu'ah, and an Imam has the chance to get them all worked up.....

Many Islamic political movements (e.g. Iranian Revolution) have taken their origin and impetus from the communal prayers and sermons. In many Islamic countries the role of a Friday preacher is a powerful and coveted one (see e.g. List of current Iranian Friday prayers Imams). In theocratic countries such as Iran, significant political developments are first announced in Friday sermons.

I know that the majority of Muslims can't be so violent and quick to anger. If the majority would just stand up and silence this vocal, idiotic minority, no one would think bad of Islam and Muslims.

Its a sad fact when the majority are soo afraid of the minority that the majority runs and hides instead of taking a stand.....

Could be in reality that we have it all wrong...the minority could be the ones running and hiding from the majority...hmm

The problem is that the majority, while not violent or quick tempered, are apologists or sympathizers to those fundies.

Most normal people grab a few beers on friday night to unwind, try to score with the old lady.

When you can't drink and your wife is scared to death of men, nothing left but to riot.

While that might be more true than those of us who'd rather just get along with Muslims would care to admit, I think it doesn't help when a lot of the non-Muslim world is so anti-Muslim. It's certainly a catch-22, as much of the anti-Islam sentiments come from the bad things coming out of the Muslim community, but I don't think it helps moderate Muslims at all when you have a huge number of Americans who think strip searching the Muslims in the key to airport security.

Anti-Muslim sentiment does not exist in a vacuum. A lot of the non-Muslim world is anti-Muslim for good reason.

Chuck Colsen had a sign in his office... (Nixon aide) and it sorta said .. "when you got em by the 'balls' their hearts and minds will follow"...

Consider in a small village or large city .. a group of people all worked up over an issue.. and the common peace lover knows that if he don't comply he'll become a statistic... Everyone wants to live.. so apathy.. I think it is fear..

Or that the majority secretly agrees with the radicals?

The majority wants to live and let live not paint targets on their backs. All the radicals have to do is kill or threaten a few and the rest fall in line or go into hiding.

Anti-Muslim sentiment does not exist in a vacuum. A lot of the non-Muslim world is anti-Muslim for good reason.

Thank you for making that astonishingly insightful point by repeating back to me exactly what I just said (I'm sorry, you said "anti-Muslim sentiment" instead of "anti-Islam sentiment"). Congratulations, you have proven yourself to be the intellectual equal of a parrot!

Seriously, that was exactly my point (the phrase, "catch-22" comes to mind for some reason...) and I made it for a good reason, it is a big part of the problem with our current situation. There ARE bad things coming from some members of the Muslim community, which fuels anti-Muslim views, which makes it harder for moderate Muslims to be heard at all (ah, hated by both sides, what a great position they are in...) which makes is harder to control the negative elements which leads to MORE anti-Muslim feelings and on and on. So what are we going to do, throw up our hands and just start mowing down Muslims at random? It seems like WE are in a unique position to be able to help moderate Muslims gain a greater voice, and we're squandering it because we feel justified in getting all pissy at Islam in general. Which is great, but we're not 12 years old, we need to be able to put aside emotional responses and figure out what is a good idea in the long term...and going around ranting about how evil Islam is, while emotionally satisfying, is probably NOT a useful approach. If you have trouble telling those apart, keep in mind that if Bill O'Reilly is doing it, chances are it is doing absolutely dick to help the situation.
