You dont have to visit to know that it is full of devastating crime, poverty, hot women, and people who appear to be women until you get back to your hotel room.

These poor mothers' rationale is that if the baby dies, it wasn't worth caring for. Such is the lot of people living in a country trying to develop, but burdened by a "caring" bureaucracy and government interference.

So I take it you've actually been there?

I've been there. Parts of Rio and the surrounding areas are freaking gorgeous.

The problem is that right across the street from that 5-star hotel is a favela (really, really bad slum). Also, Gaunabara Bay smells like shit (because it's full of shit).

Overall, if you're going with someone who speaks Portugese, it can be a blast. However, almost no one there speaks English. Either way, I'd go again.
