Brazil suffers from high rates of infanticide due to lack of maternal care between birth and the first few months of life.

These poor mothers' rationale is that if the baby dies, it wasn't worth caring for. Such is the lot of people living in a country trying to develop, but burdened by a "caring" bureaucracy and government interference.

Brazil has the highest income disparity in the world. It has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world. There is a positive correlation.

So I take it you've actually been there?

I've been there. Parts of Rio and the surrounding areas are freaking gorgeous.

The problem is that right across the street from that 5-star hotel is a favela (really, really bad slum). Also, Gaunabara Bay smells like shit (because it's full of shit).

Overall, if you're going with someone who speaks Portugese, it can be a blast. However, almost no one there speaks English. Either way, I'd go again.
