Rio Carbon 5GB $199

Now shipping. Amazon - through J&R has the new Rio Carbon 5GB MP3 player for ordering at $199, $4.95 shipping. 20 hour battery life. Tax in NY

Does this thing require Rio's software to transfer files to and from it? The old (black) ones did and it was a pain. If it show up as a regular USB hard drive on Windows, then it'd be awesome, cause then I can use it in Linux too

No, no software needed, you can use it as external drive. It is USB 2, of course.

Hmm, this is what CNet's review said:
"Rio supplies its own much-improved Rio Music Manager, but the Carbon is also compatible with Windows Media Player 10.0 and Apple iTunes . . . " Doesn't mention regular HD. Not stopping me from getting it though 🙂

What CNet refers is Rio's own music management software, similar to MusicMatch, but much better - you can organize your music list many ways, by title,....
Rio Carbon does show up as a regular USB drive, you don't need any software to move around your music. Frankly, $200 for an small sized 5 GB external harddrive is worth the price.
