Rio 500 screwed my SmartMedia card (60% memory irretreivable)

about 38MB of my 64MB card is irretreivable right now...lost, forever.

one day when i was transferring songs or formatting (can't remember), the rio500 stopped responding. couldn't even shut it off - had to pull the battery out. now over half the memory is gone, but the rest works. i have an external memory card reader, but i can't format it in there because it won't detect it. i don't know the chipset it's using either so downloading drivers for xp won't work in case i wanted to logically format the card using SMPREP

any ideas?

(and i'm aware that if i could get a hold of a PMP300, there's a utility for formatting SM cards w/ damaged logical partitions. i can't get a hold of one)

What brand is it.. i had a damaged lexar cf, when i put it in the reader, it warms up and not detect.. i had 5 year warranty on it.. send it back, they did a hard reset, update the firmware and send it back.. and it was working great.
