Ringing/reverberating sound from subwoofer at high volume

I've had a set of Logitech z640 5.1 speakers for a few years that recently developed an odd problem: if I turn up the volume way up, the subwoofer stats to make a very loud ringing/reverberating noise, even if there is no actual sound playing on my computer. Even with the sub's volume turned all the way down and the "low frequency" volume set to low in Windows, I still get the loud ringing noise when turning the speaker volume knob up beyond ~60%. This never used to happen before and I don't know enough about speakers to tell if this is a software issue, connectivity problem or if something broke in the subwoofer.

Any ideas?

Unplug the speakers from the computer and turn them up.

If the problem still occurs, then you know it's a speaker problem.

If the problem goes away, then it's something odd going on with the soundcard or something.

Good call! I just tried this and I only get the ringing noise when the speakers are connected to the computer. I then realized that my microphone is connected in the same place and decided to unplug it. Lo and behold, no more ringing noise! I guess the microphone was creating some kind of feedback loop at high volumes. Anyways, problem solved, thanks for the help :)

You could probably leave the mic plugged in and just mute it until you're using it.

yeah, i had this problem with my work computer through the headphones. It only took the Mic input (with no mic attached) to be enable to have tons of noise and ringing constantly. Muting the mic input solved the problem.
