So i got a gateway system on my hands that can't get any os's to run.

The problem is that it comes with RIMM ram (very exotic), you know the kind that can only be installed in pairs.....g@y

Anywho, the last thing that the system showed was a blue screen (as reported by the original owner) [of death] ?

The bios seems to be an asus, judging by the color, the mobo is green however. The Rimms are samsung with heatspreaders. And the Proc is a P4 @ 2.0 (400 mhz bus i assume).

Compusa said the Ram and the hdd died. I replaced the hdd and set the ram test on in the bios and it counted only upto 131 megs out of the 512.

So can Ram just die like that? Granted the reported system age is ~6 years, and it was on all of the time. And now if i got new Rimms would the system work? The reason i'm hesitating is that the ram is somewhat expensive and can only be bought in pairs.

LMK. Thanks anandtech uzers

Have you tried reseating the RAM & CPU (and any other cards installed)?

Have you tried clearing the CMOS yet?

Any electronic item can fail @a moments notice so it is possible the RAM is bad.

Gateway used Intel, Asus, MSI or Jetaway motherboards.
You can check on their website by entering the Serial number.

I reseated the cpu and the ram and all the other cards. When i put in a hdd with a system it just clears the whole screen and it turns black with a little dash blinking in the top left corner. The ram count is 132 mb.
