One of my dogs managed to get a hold of a container of rimadyl (doggy pain medicine). The child proof lock wasn't enough. (Nor having them where I thought they'd be well out of reach.) There were 9 100mg tablets left. The dogs weights are 130 pounds, 85 pounds, and 40 pounds. Dosage is 1mg per pound twice a day. I haven't a clue which actually ate them, but I don't suspect the one who actually needs them (just had surgery to remove a tumor yesterday.) Plus, he's whining a little bit because it hurts! :( I feel bad for him.

Would you consider 3-4 days worth of tablets to be an overdose significant enough to call a vet? (I guess it'd be like a human taking 3 days worth of some 2 tablets per day medicine)

If it was the little one he needs to get to a vet. Rimadyl is processed through the liver and a dose that large could be fatal. (I'm going on my comparative knowledge of humans).

I'd be concerned if the large one ate them all too. CALL THE VET.

Watch for lethargy.

Agreed, and I would watch for strange behavior...how long ago did this happen, or how long ago did you find this?

Yeah I'd check with the vet and keep an eye on all 3 of them. I had some Rimadyl for my MinPin and I think they were 25mg and the vet said to cut those pills in half to give to him. He was only about 15 lbs.

I guess the only solution is to never let him see where they're kept.

A quick Google search said that overdosing can cause diarrhea, so watch out.

Thanks. I was already on the phone with the answering service which then contacted the vet who called us back. No antidote. We're pretty sure it was the medium sized dog (85 pounds). The heavier dog was still in pain, not happy. Vet said that the worst would probably be a gi bleed, and a small chance of renal failure. I'm kicking myself for not having mineral oil and activated charcoal on hand. Oh well. As of 6am, the dogs all seemed fine.
