About time. RIM needs to completely redesign their OS to remain competitive into the future.

Now think if RIM would of done this before Apple's 2007 iPhone. Today is a different world for smartphones as competition is much more fierce. This will be interesting.

I wonder how long it will take them to deliever a smartphone with the new os design. I got another year on my tour contract but I don't see a reason for me to rush and get os 6. It does not seem that impressive.

Well, I'm bummed a bit because with this acquisition, they (presumably) won't be doing any more Meego stuff and I'm hoping Meego takes off because I'm a bit disconcerted by a tablet future without my company's products in it (I work for Intel).

It seems like a wise move to me. Apple has been moving heavily into BB's territory with it's push for corporate users and they've had relative success. If BB doesn't want to get shoved into a niche corporate corner, they need to move into Apple's territory with general consumer appeal. I'm not sure that I'm super impressed with the practicality of TAT's stuff, but it probably has high consumer appeal.

It's been a while since I've spent time playing with BB's OS and so I haven't seen the newest release, but my previous experiences were that the BB OS was very practical and not flashy. I think BB could use some artistic input to compete better with Apple going forward.

Just a bummer they had to take a development team that had been doing some Meego work. :)

Great move by RIM. TAT is primarily a design company and I linked to a Fujitsu prototype/demo that featured a dual screen phone. It was designed in conjunction with TAT.

The bad for RIM is, it's going to take a minimum of 6 months for this to start showing up in production designs and probably 12 months is more realistic. Apple and Google are not going to be sitting still.

I think RIM was a little shocked that the Torch wasn't a blowout success and may have gotten inspired to up the game a bit.

The Torch is actually a decent placeholder, but as akugami says, they'll need some time to sort out what direction they want to go.

Used a Torch the other day, and it was the first BB I didn't want to give back immediately, I'd still never buy one, but it's not horrible.

The Torch is a step in the right direction. The problem with the Torch though is that in a world of highly competitive smart phones, the Torch was only a half step for RIM. If RIM wanted to compete it should of been at least two full steps.

MrX has the right idea. The torch was not an evolution of the OS like they marketed it to be. I really hope the playbook os is amazing. I am sure they could port it to a smartphone. I am not sure if android has push email yet but if it does when I have contract renewal it will be hard for me to keep going with blackberry.

Android has gmail push at the very least. Or are you actually talking about Exchange support?
