Rim help/questions

Howdy guys!

Looking for some advice from you savy users. I have a set of Axis Penta Rims that look just like the ones in the below picture.

This past winter I was stupid and neglected them and didn't take them off until winter came in and so I didn't get a chance to properly clean them.

Now the polished lips have can can be best decribed as little spiders in them. No amount of cleaning seems to do anything and from talking to the local tire repair shop, the say they can repair it no problem (great!)

Now two different tire shops quoted different prices and procedures for the fix.

1)Clear cloat needs to be stripped off lip repolished and then the clear coat reapplied.
2)Clear cloat needs to be stripped off lip repolished and thats it?

I'm not sure what the difference is, whats the better long term option? Best value for money?

If anyone thinks it will add to the discussion, I can get pics of the damage, and post em up.

I'm sure number 2 is cheaper but the best bet is probably to repolish and then clear coat as that will protect the alloy from pitting etc.

I would agree, assuming the shop knows what it's doing. It would be shitty if their clear coat started to come off too. I would be tempted to keep it bare aluminum and polish it every so often if they seem a little skeevy.

Also, it's a wheel. Not a rim. Not a dub. Not a *lame, fake, or misapplied word*. I am designing wheels as part of my job right now, and improper terminology makes my job difficult, especially when dealing with 3-piece wheels where there actually is a part called a "rim half".

Is it just the clear coat that is compromised, or did corrosion start in the aluminum? Because if it's just the former, you don't necessarily need to polish the aluminum (though it will help).

I wonder if you'd want to polish the aluminum after stripping the clear coat because the stripping chemicals can damage the aluminum?

Depends. I know you can use aircraft stripper on aluminum to remove paint and not damage the aluminum, but something else might be necessary to remove a "plastic" clear coat which may damage the aluminum.

Just call a few other shops and tell them you need a rim job. Post back here when you're done.
