Will hurt rim device sales but at least it will keep them in the game.

They also announced BlackBerry Balance. This I have known about for about a year or so. It was originally called 'Personas' and it brings a work/personal life separation to your device with BBOS 7. Your IT gimps can lock down the device all they like, but you'll still have a personal side you can load apps, songs, videos into and the two halves cannot communicate. Pretty good solution to that locked down lump of coal many corps hand out.

RIM needs a root and branch change in its products if it wants to compete. this move is interesting, but needed. If Blackberry phones had Android or even iOS as a base, then so be it. Blackberry OS cannot compete in terms of apps, so why not coast on the more popular OS'.

3 million downloads per day. What is everybody downloading, thin air?

Also, as already posted, QNX.

But is that enough? Most users/followers of smartphones are starting in a large way to pooh-pooh Blackberrys. RIM needs to step up to the game, as Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc. are leaving it behind. Millions of apps may be downloaded, but where is Blackberry OS relative to iOS or Android? it's market share is far smaller.

Last gasps at trying to keep their BES customers in place by offering to "manage" ios and android phones because they are moving away from Blackberry's.

QNX looks like the first BB OS I could stand to use on a daily basis.

BES covering Android & iOS devices was a smart move, one of the best moves RIM has made in a long time...

It's about fucking time. I dont want their handsets, but I do want the rest of the end to end solution.

Will QNX eventually get BES then? Because it's not even mentioned in this press release...

Also, what ever happened to multi-platform BBM...?

Multi platform BBM was mentioned a couple of months ago on a number of tech sites, with possibly Android before the end of this year and iOS for 1st half 2012. I have to say that is really the one thing I miss about RIM. If there's a multiplatform BES solution, hopefully that means a multiplatform BIS is in the works. I'd pay a few bucks a month to either my carrier or RIM itself in order to use BBM on my iPhone.

It's one of the features unique to Blackberries that keeps some of us coming back.

It's the only thing about them for the 'consumer' that is absolutely entirely better.

I'd still switch to iphone at this point if it had a keyboard.

will companies really pay the upfront cost and licensing for BES just to manage other devices? users like them because some crazy IT departments think they need to gimp everything

If you support all three major smartphone platforms then having one platform to manage them is ideal. Using three different management platforms is not ideal.

As I type this I'm pretty sure that as it stands Android doesn't currently have a management platform, am I right?

with with some companies you really do need a lot of security on a device. but with most companies i bet no one is going to want to spend money on this since they don't care about management except remote wipe

Remote wipe and making sure your secuirty requirements are intact are very important. How many iphones do you see people just swipe the little slider and you're in.
Do you want CFO's, or people in finance departments with sensative emails to have them that easily accessed?

This solution sounds like a winner. As long as the console isn't buggered up, BES admins can jump right in and go. No need for extensive training to get it going.

you can do the same thing via the MS Exchange console with the special license. what's the point of BES if a lot of users want iphones and android? the only value i can see is restricting android users from installing apps since there is a lot of shady stuff in the market

i know of companies with blackberries and BES, and no restrictions. BES is there only for push email and easy configuration. nothing bad has happened in years. there's HIPAA and other environments where security is needed due to trade secrets, but for a lot of companies it's not that big a deal to dump BES and BB's for iphones and android. the benefits outweigh the features you lose
