so i have about 90 quid to spend and i aim at spending it here overclockers.co.uk

i have a KT333 mobo and with a bios update i will be allowed to use a 333FSB CPU. however i only got 512 PC2100 ram

now i want to upgrade mainly to improve UT2k4 performance ( i have a 9500pro and see no need for a GFX upgrade) so first off...

either

1) keep old xp2000 palomino....upgrade ram to pc2700 (not that the FSB of 266 can use it)
2) keep ram....go for a 2500 barton
3) some other cpu...like a 2600 thorough bred perhaps?

please have a look round that site its a very good place to buy (if ur english :) )

Go for a 2500+ Barton (mobile!)
It's unlocked, so you can run it at a good speed, even though only a 133MHz FSB.
It's only £60, so you'll have some money left over, which you can put towards some faster RAM.

I'm thinking about upgrading, and I'm looking at an nForce 2, Barton 2500+ (mobile), and then later getting some faster RAM (currently have PC2100 and a Pally 1900+).
Similar boat, I want better UT2k4 performance and I have a 9800.

I think going fo rthe CPU will show most boost, UT2k4 is processor hungry, and a mobile Barton shoul dbe able to overclock quite well (especially if you later upgrade the RAM).

ahh yeah the 2500 mobile is only 266 which would match my ram nicely. plus i hear its a good o/c er and i got a pretty hefty HSF and thankfully my mobo allows for multiplier and vcore changes :)

are u sure the 2500 mobile is a barton tho? it doesnt say on the OCers website

All the reviews say Barton.
They also seem to suggest that there are 333MHz and 266MHz FSB 2500+'s, and it's up to the notebook mfr to choose.

See here
C - Relates to maximum front-side bus speed. The literature contends that C translates to a 133MHz FSB. Desktop Barton XP2500+s are all run off a 166MHz FSB. That's the one notable difference. It seems as if it's up to notebook designers to choose the desired FSB. That in turn leads us to believe that these CPUs are unlocked, unlike the very latest desktop processors.

Another review:
SPECIFICATIONS:
Processor: XP 2500+ Mobile Barton processor
Cache: 512kb
mhz: 1830 MHZ
Bus: 333MHZ
Stepping: IQYHA
Multiplier: 11 (Unlocked)

But you should be able to run it at 133MHz FSB and just up the multiplier I guess, and it should be fine (that's what I hope).

jus checked the cpu support list on the MSI site for my mobo and with a bios update i can have a 333FSB 2500 barton which is good news!!

but with my ram ill have to change the FSB back down to 133 and then up the multiplier.
a 133x15 should give me about 2ghz and i can go up to 1.8v on the core not that i would as thats a bit high....could easily run at 1.65 tho

would running it in 333 mode kill my ram or would the computer jus do it lowest common denominator thing and set everything to the slowest speed it found..

The mobile 2500 barton is 266 bus, but you can run it at 400fsb. If you mobo is 333, then you can run it at that as well. I have mine running 200x12@1.675v (400fsb).
