Something has happend to my installation of Windows XP so that when I right click on a text file (or any other file for that matter) the machine hangs for 10 - 15 seconds before bringing up the context menu.

I have run Ad Aware and hijack this and removed any spyware found.

I have even reinstalled windows XP over the top (upgrade) and still the issue persists.

I have tried using a standard VGA driver and still the issue persists

I have downloaded 71.89 of the forceware drivers and they did not fix the issue.

any other suggestions on where I should be looking to solve this one would be apprieciated.

I had this happen to me a while back going from ti4200 to 4600. Uninstall all the nvidia video drivers and rerun it. You might have to get driver utiltiy cleaner also. give this a try. Use the Nvidia video drivers though. Make sure you include the Nvidia desktop utility. good luck

You probably installed something that added a right-click context menu item and that app is slow to respond. Easiest fix is to use system restore to go back to a restore point prior to the problem occuring.

Solved.

Right Click context menu can be the culprit and thier is a good artical on how to trouble shoot it here:
Slow Right Click

This was not found to be my problem and upon further investigation I found that Right-click is extremely slow only when the Network is enabled.

The solution can be found here:
Right Click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled

In my case when I searched the registry for the machine name of my old PC as this is the only other PC on my network, what I found was that FlashFXP.EXE was trying to launch from the networked PC that when it is OFF causes the slow right click behaviour. I cleaned up these entries and bingo all is well.

I even remember that after building my new PC i ran Flash FXP from the network share on my other PC as I had not installed it on my new PC yet to transfur some files from my XBOX, little did I know the performance impact this little act had on my PC.

Mental note to self - Don't run apps from the network unless the machine is on 24x7
