right click-->copy problems solved by changing Norton 360 Shell Extension... okay?

Hi guys

Hope I can explain this one, it's kind of weird. I was helping my Dad clean up his My Documents folder. Halfway through the process, I could not longer choose several .doc files, highlight them, and then right click and choose copy. The process would just hang and I would have to use Ctrl-->Alt-->Delete to end it.

Did some web searches about the problem and found out about ShellExView . Following some online instructions, I slowly started to disable the 'Context Menu' extensions. It didn't take long. When I disabled the Context Menu item associated with Norton 360, which is called BUContext MenuClass the problem disappeared. Enabling the item immediately produced the same problem.

Norton 360 wasn't my first choice for my Dad's system. I used to think of Norton stuff as terrible, bloated and a resource hog. I was away from town for a while and my Dad had some computer problem; he had a guy in who uninstalled Avast and installed this version of Norton AV.

Is it okay for me to have disable this 'Context Menu' item? In truth I have no idea what it is - I was just following some online troubleshooting tips I got, which happened to work. Is my Dad's computer open to attack if I disable the item? I left it enabled until I get an answer to this.

Here is the specific information from the relevant line in ShellExView

Extension Name : BUContext MenuClass
Disabled?: No
Type: Context Menu
Description: Backup Shell
Version: 1.1.2.2
Product Name: Norton 360
Company" Symantec
My Computer: No
Desktop: No

Hope this is clear and that someone can give me a hint as to what's going on here.

GB, thanks for the reply.

Wow, MSE huh? In my (tech amateur) world, installing a piece of MSFT software is only something you do if you don't have any other options. I guess maybe times are changing, though. I'll take that under advisement, and do a few searches to find out about MSE.

I was also looking for some guidance as to whether this Norton Shell Extension was known to cause this type of problem, or whether disabling this item causes Norton 360 to become non-functional.

I'm guessing its the: "Scan with Norton 360 item".
You can safely disable it, if thats it.
If you need to scan folders manually, you can just do a manual scan in Norton 360 and select which folders to scan.

Norton is almost worse than a virus. It hogs all of your system resources, and it adds no really useful features. There is not a single alternative antivirus program that isn't better than Norton. It might have an alright detection rate, but in my experience, it fucking sucks at removing pretty much any virus.

If you decide that you don't like M$'s antivirus, you can also try Avast. It's free, and it works great for me.

Thanks guys. Here's the dumb part of this - I had installed Avast when we got my Dad this rig. The guy who came in and worked on my Dad's computer uninstalled it and installed Norton. Who knows why he did this. My Dad is 82 and God bless him, although he is a very tech savvy 82-year old, he occasionally clicks on stuff he shouldn't. He got an infection and this guy came in to help him clean it up (I tried via phone and using MBAM and LogMeIn but couldn't get my Dad to follow all the instructions I had for him, as it necessitated a few restarts and that of course kills the LogMeIn connection).

Ah well, things are running ok now. I'll eventually ditch Norton, as I share your opinion of it, based just on what you guys have said about it over the years.

Ok, I'll check if that's the one. Thanks for the specific advice.
