What is this post for:
Many AT members aren't from the states. In the other world countries, latest hardware like Ati X1900XTX and other exotic sollutions aren't yet available and probably won't be for 1-2 months at least. This post is about a computer setup that's proven to work, parts that work well together, it's still top of the line.
-------

Ok first of all, this rig I have now was an upgrade from a previus rig.

This is a seriosly recommended build:
- Athlon X2 4200+ (2.2ghz stock, 512kb cashe for each core) 11x200mhz

- DFI Lanparty Ultra-D SLI

- 2 x 7800GTX SLI Gainward golden sample or 2 x 7800GT

- 2 x 1GB OCZ DDR500

- 2 x 250GB Hitachi Deskstar's sata2

Crucial momment:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2 x 17" LCD, I prefer samsung/hyndai, has to have DVI in and 12ms or better response

- 1 x 19" LCD, whatever, I have L90D+ Hyndai

You probably already have a 17" LCD. If you already have 19" LCD then replace the 2 x 17" recommendation with 2 x 19". Crucial part is the 3 monitor setup for every multitasker!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Chieftec Dragon Case, DX series, black

- Coolermaster 550W SLI approved PSU, 1x120mm fan only, silent almost

- Zalman 9500CNPS or 7700 Al-Cu

- Nec 3550 or 4551 DVDRW drive

- External card reader

- External 2.5" laptop harddrive in USB2.0 enclosure, 40gb drives are cheap!

- Logitech G5 mouse

- Logitech OEM keyboard, I have internet pro

- Logitech Z5500 speakers

- Audigy Xfi platinum, with the external unit...

--------------------------

Dunno how much this will cost you but this build rocks.
I recommend 2 x Nvidia cards because Triple or Quadriple monitor setup is easy to run and switching from SLI to NonSli(to be able to run the monitors is easy)

I have the 19" LCD as a center, and the 2x 17" LCDs as satellites. Use this rig for everything.

The CPU is clocked at 2.6Ghz, Sandra says PR7800+ lol, actually at this speed it's similar or slightly better than Athlon 4800+ X2 (costs twice as much)..

--------------------------
This rig is recommended build for:
- Casual to regular gamer type of guy that stays at 1680x1050 or 1280x1024
- Work rig for web designer, movie editor, sound editors (DJs), HEAVY MULTITASKER
- Gizmo freak, the board has 10USB ports, all at full spead
- DFI has excellent cheramic capacitors, almost all have passive fans...
Great all round rig for which I bet you can use most of your components like old 17" LCDs, 7800series of cards etc..

I know this isn't the latest and the greatest. If ATI and it's 1900XTX had crossfire on the same level as Nvidia's sli I'd probably get that but...

PM for pics, Folding@home and prime stability etc...

------------------------------

Currently working web design (photoshop, illustrator, fireworks, dreamweaver), running IE, Firefox (3 browser windows x 25 tabs on average), BS player or Winamp, ICQ, MSN, Outlook, Microsoft Active Sync, Bluetooth, Nokia PC Connect.

For those that don't want to give so much money for the sound part, here's a cheaper alternative:
- Audigy 2 ZS platinum
- AKG 141 studio mointor speakers, or if you want to go cheap, KOSS R80
- Logitech Z3 2.1 speakers...

This coming from an audiophile works great. Hooking up the Logitech will give you good bass and the Headphones will take care of mid and high tones. Kind of a weird setup but works trust me and it's a cheap alternative to 10k+ speakers. 🙂

Instead of piling up monitors on your desk, just get a Dell 2405FPW and be over with, IMHO. I use the 2005FPW and find it more than adequate for most tasks (I mostly write code - the widescreen format is a HUGE advantage).

Why would anyone want such a puny monitor. 🙂 Dell 3007WFP

(Still, the 24" beat's my 19" CRT)

 The 2005FPW is an excellent monitor. I love the ability to have two documents open at the same time or two browsers and be able to view them in their entirety simultaneously. Widescreen gaming also rocks (when you find games like CS:S, DOD:S that support widescreen). Once you go widescreen you'll never go back.

Holy crap. I might go SLI just for one of those!!
I have a pair of 17" LCD right now, and that thing probably take more desk space then they do.
