i know, it is overkill. i just want to make sure there isnt going to be any power supply problems when he is in iowa.

Not all that bad. If it were me I would've gone Intel (not that I'm partial to AMD or Intel, it's just that the latter seems to have better deals right now) with an 865PE board and maybe a 2.8C w/ HT... probably adds up to about the same cost as the nForce2 and 3000+. Also think it's worth a few extra bucks for better speakers if he's going to be listening to any music or doing any gaming at all. On the positive side the 1GB of PC3200 should last him a good while.

BTW, why did spend $100 on another power supply when the Chieftech case already comes with a 450W PSU? You could have easily picked up a far nicer case w/out PSU for the same price if an Antec 480W was absolutely necessary.

uh wow that is expensive. It almost seems kind of odd - why does a college bound student need a 9800pro and a DVDrw? On top of that I don't need having a pimped out case is of necessity 🙂

Either way tell your buddy to remember to do all his work and not spend it gaming b/c I've heard how some kids drop out b/c they spend too much time gaming. and that is the reason my pc won't get any videocard update while i am in college unless i have somehow learned how to schedule my time and do my work on my own

but it really seems like you spent a lot of extra money just to make it look cool and to me that isn't a justified purchase

that and some of the things could be had a B&M stores for cheaper...liek that 80gig WDSE for 90$ is a tad expensive for my tastes

i just bought the same hdd (wdc 80GB se) for $80 on newegg, and it came with a free hat... Also, i agree that most of that is overkill. For that money u could have built a kiss ass intel system.

Indeed, AMD's highend cpu's such as the XP3000 just don't cut it, Intel has way better offerings, you shoulda gone 865/875 with a P4-C🙂.

$90 for the chieftec case that comes with a 450 W PSU and then replace it with an antec tru-blue ? Should have just bought an antec with antec psu.

Also, $9 for each UV LED fan ?

You should have just picked up some $4 panaflo fans and put more money into a monitor ($141 - 17" is kind of smallish for CRT) and speakers ($25 speakers for someone with a $250 DVD-R ?). The headphones you selected cost $17... should that $17 be put towards some real headphones like Grados or something ?

Lastly, you may be able to save some a few bucks by ordering your rounded cables from SVC... though monarch may not want to ship you a computer without cables.

No software needed I see.

i had to get the chieftec case with the PSU cuz he hated the chieftec cases with the side fan. and the cases without them started at 89.99 withou the psu also. so why not spend 2 extra bucks and get a case with an extra psu? that was his decision, i would have just opted for the case with the side fan for 30 bucks cheaper, but it IS his computer.

about the monitor, his dorm room desk simply wont allow for larger than a 17 inch monitor. so i got him a nice 17 inch flat screen.

and i personally own those 25 dollar speakers and they are very high quality speakers. crisp sound. the headphones he wants to use when he is playing CS/DOD, and i heard aopen makes decent headphones, so those should work out for his needs

I think a 9700np overclocked to Pro speeds would have saved you about $100.00 which could be put towards speakers...

$2,000 system with some Creative 2.1's! ! !!

😉

Exactly, and what college student doesn't spend a lot of time downloading and listening to music? The speakers should be a priority IMO. Even if you don't want to lay down $200+ for Klipsch, Logitech makes some very good speakers in the $40-$70 range that would be a lot more practical.

[EDIT- oops!]
NewEgg's Logitech Speaker Inventory

remember the whole no overclocking thing?

and there isnt room for 5.1's in a little dorm room. i got the slk800 so i can be positive there is no heat issues. the retail amd HSF's are a little shady so i wanted to get something so i can rest easy 😉

Even at that, a 9700 Pro would have saved some dollars...

Reguardless he should be happy..

he said he wanted the best video card...so i got him that 🙂

I'll have to agree with everyone else, definate overkill on some stuff. Why go AMD when there won't be any overclocking? While I'm not the most knowledgable about AMD's, it seems that the only way they can compete with non-OC'd Intels is if they are OC'd. I just spent $700 for a 2.8c, IS7, gig of 3200 Hyperx, a nice case, and an Antec PSU (350w). Throw in the video card, optical drives, and monitor, small stuff (keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc..) and probably could have got a better system for about $1,400.

Don't get me wrong, that will be a sweet system. But to reach it's full value, you have to overclock it. What's the reason for no oc'ing? Overclocking is completely safe as long as you aren't stupid about it.

I think your buddy should invest in a 48" by 24" folding table from staples and get a 19" monitor. Dorm desks are usu. of a design that's not compatibile with real computers.

My old dorm room had the dorm desk, one of those folding tables from staples ($30) to make an L desk, and two 19" monitors.

Why DVD-R ? Why all these Blue LEDS for someone who's not a computer junkie ? No blue LEDs in your fans and using the case's PSU would save you $130 or so... maybe a tad more if you don't have them do those extra mods to the case.

BAH, this has already been ordered and there's nothing that we can do to change it at this point. I'd have made different choices (spending more on a dvd-r than on a monitor is just wrong), but such is life. Hope your friend has a good college experience.
