Rifle recomendations

I'm trying to track down a good first hunting rifle. It will need to be able to do at least white tails (Wisconsin). It needs to either come with a scope or be cheap enough that I can get one for a total of under $400. It also needs to have reasonably priced ammo.

I went to a local shop and the recomended the following two:
braztech rossi single shot
Stevens model 300

I really can't find too much information on either of the above and wondered if there were any other recomendations.

And even more useless....and I have both rifles in my collection. If you want a good hunting rifle then you should look at a nice bolt action unit with polymer stock and a scope. Take a look at Winchester and Remington. I would suggest either a 30-06 or 270 caliber.

A 30-06 would be a good first rifle. Look for a good used one if you want to save a little money.

I really don't have a clue where to send you but I do know that if you watch the ad flyers that both WalMart and Academy both have very decent sales on such rifles from time to time. I am not really sure of the values of these types of rifles but some comparison shopping should give you a good idea. I'm sure someone here will have some better pricing info than I do.

I would suggest going to a gun show or shop around gunshops or pawn shops for a nice used rifle, because $400 isn't going to make it for a new gun and scope. I would recommend a Remington ADL or BDL with a Lupould 3x9 scope, which would run $700-1000 new

It is an auction site so some of the stuff will be overpriced, but you can get an idea of what people are willing to pay.

You might be lucky with Savage Arms but then 400 and scoped that's a little far fethced by today's standard... I would say up it to max of 600 and you will be able to get maybe a Rem 700 or a Win Model 70 .308/.300 with a Leupold Var IX or Nikon or Bushmaster... I wish ya luck.

Thanks. I purchased a Savage .22 last year and the damn thing is jacked up (1/20 rounds fails to extract, 1/4 loads jam when loaded, and this is even with match grade rounds). I'm not too happy with them at the moment.

Yeah, I saw that. I dunno anything about that gun. Really, I don't mind used as long as I can see it in person and can have a friend verify that it is good.

Sorry, but IMO a .30-06 is not a good beginner gun. Especially for Wisconsin hunting.

Excellent advice. You can pick these up cheap and they are good reliable hunting rifles. Just make sure you take the time to sight in the scope properly.

If you have any reputable pawn shops in your area I would suggest looking there, most good pawn owners are also knowledgable gun dealers and should be able to hook you up. As long as you stick with the major makers Remington,Winchester,Weatherby,Seiko,etc.. you will be happy.

Are you kidding? .30-06 is a good load to start with and it has so many muntions that you could use later... it's one of the best in world and very good for beginner too... If there is any county that doesn't allows rifle, they need to look at the founding rules that we have... The 2nd...

Winnebago. Rifles "not allowed" in the county? I think not. Maybe not for hunting certain species. I want something that I can continue to hunt with, not something I will grow out of in 2 years.

Oh yeah, I can go above 400 if I have to.

Of course a 30-06 is fine for a beginning hunting rifle if the person in question is not a child. Adults don't need to start with a 243 and move up to a 30-06, this isn't a motorcycle. Any decent sized teenager should be able to handle a 30-06. My neighbor bought his 16 year old a 270 and he killed his first deer with it this season and a 270 has a very similar kick to a 30-06.

In Wisconsin a lot of deer hunting is shotgun with slugs only IIRC, but I have never lived there. Some places have different season times for different weapons.
