No, this isn't really a hot deal post, that is why its here...

My local Big 5 has a couple old rifles on sale tommorrow. Would these be good deals?

Romanian/Hungarian M44 Mosin Nagant rifle $49
"VZ24" 8mm Mauser rifle $59

I thought I should get one of each! What do you think?

A more than fair price on both if they are in good condition.

C&R places sell "in the wrap" M44s for about $100 and 24s for about $70.

Now I bet you're going to ask what a C&R place is aren't you? ;)

C&R=Curio & Relic, it's a type of firearms license. It only deals with guns 50 years and older and that meet certain requirements. Some places like AIM, SOG, WGA sell a lot of C&R rifles (typically pre 50s bolt actions and SKSs).

The C&R license (also known as an 03 FFL) lets you buy these and have them shipped to your residence. Collection purposes only. You have to keep a book, and can't sell them as a business (although buying and selling for a profit so you can enhance your collection is legal).

Hey was reading around it it looks like the ones advertised at that price are junk. Lots of pitting, rust, etc. The decent ones are running $200 which is 3x what they should be.

Unless you can find a 24 with the Lion's crest and in good condition, you may be on a bait and switch hunt.

Don't waste your money on them. The big issue for those types are the Ammo for them, you will find it very hard to find and very expensive.

Crappy surplus Mauser ammo is damn cheap from what I remember. However I think the stuff my friend was buying was corrosive so he had to clean his Mauser a ton.

Corrosive is no big deal, you just have to clean with soap and water first. I purchased an old Spanish Mauser about 10 years ago for $70 (Century Arms - I think). I have fired 1000+ rounds thru it, all cheap military surplus ammo. The benefit here is being able to shoot a lot with a rifle you don't mind bouncing around the trunk.

You shoudn't have a problem finding ammo for either rifle. There are many derivates of Mauser rifle that have been imported into US for many years and ammo has always been plentiful, including hunting rounds. As for M44, it's a fine little carbin, but I would look for a Russian or Polish specimen; they are of much higher quality then Romanian or Hungarian rifles and usually sell new or almost new for way under $100.00 If there is a gun show in your area I would recommend you attend it, you're bound to find at least one of each there.

Check to seeif the barrels have pitting and if you really want to get one find the one in the best condition.. those guns aren't garrunteed to be safe for users even if you do much with guns I wouldn't trust them.... I am not certain of thses but I believe these are random parts from origional gun stock that has been put together to make a better rifle than the origional 2 or 3...

Corrosive ammo is easy to clean. Just mix some amonia with some water and run it down the barrel and clean real good. Will neutralize the corrosive effects. Then clean like normal.

I wouldn't mind shooting corrosive through a $70 rifle, but I don't shoot it through something like a 98K Mauser which still has the Nazi marks intact. It gets the $1 a round stuff :(

Hard to find surplus 8mm that's non corrosive.
