Bah. Until we ran it without oil (always check the oil first thing in the spring) out '78 Simplicity with an old 16 HP single-cylinder Briggs just kept going and going and going. My grandfather had an old Bolens Husky from the 1960's that still runs perfectly (Kohler engine). Kohler makes arguably the best small engines, they definitely have a better reputation than the low-end Briggs, but the higher end Briggs (Vanguard and IC) are as good as anything out there.Originally posted by: Skoorb
Are there ones with Hondas? I bet the thing would last until 2030 if he got one with a honda on it 😉Originally posted by: Eli
Yeah, that's to be expected on mowers in your price range.Originally posted by: PoonDaddy007
Seems like all the riding ones I've looked at have Briggs and Straton engines ... no Hondas.
You might not be able to get away from it.
If you can, get a mower with a Vanguard Briggs engine.
If not, just make sure you change the oil every season and keep the air filter clean, and it should last a decade easy.
I would strongly recommend a Simplicity. They make good mowers. We've used nothing else and had great luck.
