This is somewhat old, but I doubt many people know of it...

In a way to make money from something completely worthless, some smart guys took the domain .ws (Western Samoa) and renamed it "World Site".

They're now charging registration fees it on the same level as .com, .net and .org! And they think people will gladly register it....sheesh!
