Ridiculously expensive old CPUs.

I'm trying to find a CPU for my old P67 board, and holy crap they are expensive. A Core i5-3450 is $200. 3550 and 3340 are both $270. A 3330 is over $300!

It's kind of ridiculous how expensive these old CPUs are. These are all on Amazon, btw. I don't know where these sellers are getting these numbers from.

You're probably just looking in the wrong places.

i5-2400s are pretty cheap, and similar specs to the ones you mention.

Yep, get a i5-2500. It is $100 used, there are several on the bay right now. Search for SR00T. The 3rd gen i5s are all way overpriced relative to 2nd gen.

When was that ever even a thing? The two year shelf life of the recent platforms is pretty unfortunate, but I can't think of one that really lasted longer than four years. (You could argue Socket 775, and I'd remind you that early 775 boards didn't support later C2D/C2Q chips.)

My 1366 board lasted a while. From i7-950 to xeon x5690. About double the CPU power on the same platform. I don't see the need to upgrade this comp anytime soon.

I have a board but no CPU - got the board from a friend. Came with 16gb DDR3. I wanted to use it to upgrade my old gaming PC (C2D E8500, 6gb ram, some Gigabyte P45 mobo) and give it to a family member.

A 2500 would probably do, and $100 is about my limit for something that's that many generations behind. I never have the latest gen tech. My laptop is Haswell CPU and 1st gen Maxwell GPU... heck my server is an Allendale (or was is Conroe?) C2D!

775 and everything prior. $50 C2Q's are everywhere so if the plan had been to upgrade to quad from say an E6600 which had a long life in its own right, that would have been a valid plan. I don't get this price parity stuff among the Core i5s and i7s.

A 2500 certainly would! In lieu of upgrading to a completely new platform, I just sourced a used 2500K for my gaming rig to use in a leftover Z68 board I had. Saved me some good loot and I have a reasonably competent gaming rig that's still relevant today.

You can still get a low end dualie and upgrade to a quad later. There's about a 4x performance disparity between the low end duals and the high end i7s.

The price parity stuff is because there haven't otherwise been significant performance gains, so unless you REALLY, REALLY want USB3, it's always going to be better performance/$ to simply replace the old, broken part with a compatible replacement, rather than building a new system. Nobody's in a real hurry to get rid of anything Sandy Bridge or newer, so no glut, so no underpricing.

Gotta' go used, but there are DEALS to be had! I snagged a dual-core G530 for $10CDN, speedy i3-2130 for $30CDN, i5-2400 for $90CDN and i7-2600 for $120CDN.

Scour your ads here or in local kijiji, etc. i3's are a fantastic bargain, but you might get lucky on an i5 or i7. Your board is a 2nd-gen, so I'd aim for 2nd-gen chips. The 3rd-gen chips you were quoting might not even work without a BIOS update!

My s775 from 2008 is still my main PC. Updated the c2d 8600 to a q9550 for 200 bucks last year and replaced all the spiny HDs with SSD and added a r290 and this puppy playes GTAV in HD with all settings maxxed.
