My girlfriend moved back home for the summer to take a class at a community college and she just got a job at a grocery store across the street from her house. Turns out the store has a pretty stupid (at least in my opinion) on buying cigarettes and alcohol.

You can only buy them if you are at least 23 and have a valid Illinois ID.

I could have sworn I heard it was illegal to refuse to allow someone to buy those products if they were of legal age?

Nope. Alcohol and Tobacco can be refused to anyone.

What other products does this hold true for?

Anything and evrything Mike, if I don't want to sell you gas or candy, you are out of luck, there is no law that states I have to sell you something.

Anything. No one is required by law to do business with anyone else as long as they aren't discriminating against a protected class.

But wouldn't this situation fall under age discrimination?

That's only applicable if I choose not to sell to a certain type of individual, say asians.

If you come into my station with a loud mouth, I'm going to kick your butt out and refuse to do business with you.

yea wassup with this restocking fee crap?
i wanted to buy a cheap laptop to take with me on my trip to FL..to store pics and check email and whatnot. but i have no actual need for a laptop...so i planned on gettin one...then returning it when i got back within a week (i really take care of my stuff and would make sure the thing doesnt get any scratches). turns out that BB charges a 15% restocking fee. i thought only online stores do that. oh well. i decided against buying a cheap laptop. will see if one of my friends has an old one i could borrow

You're mad at Best Buy because they won't let you take one of their new computers on vacation with you for free?

I don't blame Best Buy's return policy, I blame your scamming policy

Yea no sh!t, you are the reason for the 15% restocking fee. Do you realize that when you return that laptop they now have to sell it as an Open-box product, and lose quite a bit if money on it?

Bingo.

Confirmed.

Basically what Roger is saying is applicable. That's why many places can and will refuse service to people they don't want to deal with. Sometimes it hurts business sometimes it doesn't. You're going to find it more with a small time store than a Corporation. Corps care about bottom line only most of the time. One hilarious experience I know of, is my friend's boss. He's the GM of a theme park, and they went to a restaurant that night. He's in his 40's(and looks it) and was refused service because he left his ID at the park. Finally a manager intervened.

That's what I assumed at first... He can't possibly be serious...

But he stopped posting in the thread, so maybe he was.

Yep. They hassled me on an exchange of a defective (DOA) product some time back and pretty much lost my business for life. Was only a $100 item too, that didn't work right out of the box. They kept saying that I must have broken it, dropped it, etc. Really pissed me off, as their CSR's were extremely rude and untruthful. And this was just an exchange the day after initial purchase. I didn't want my money back, just a working product. I finally got my way, but I had to be very firm about it. Not the way I like to do business.
Of course, it's probably people like Aharami who ruin it for everybody though...
