Ever wonder why many people hold doctors in such high esteem?

Doctors aren't really smarter than other folks. THEY JUST KNOW MORE LATIN.

You, too, can speak in sesquipedalian obfuscatory terminology!

As a beginning, you can replace the simple, easily understood English adages in your daily speech with these elegant and nearly unintelligible Latinate equivalents...
  • Antimedico diurnal pomiferance ~ An apple a day keeps the doctor away
  • Bimanual ablutionary reciprocity ~ One hand washes the other
  • Cardiopusillanimity bellafemina ~ Faint heart never won fair lady
  • Chronopantraumatherapy ~ Time heals all wounds
  • Contralaterograminal hyperviridiance ~ The grass is greener on the other side
  • Dorsoreciprocal abrasion ~ You scratch my back, I scratch yours
  • Eluopetric abryolexy ~ A rolling stone gathers no moss
  • Equidulcent rosaliance ~ A rose by any other name
  • Exocardial autoprandiation ~ Eat your heart out
  • Felinolingual seizure ~ Cat got your tongue
  • Fumoincendiary juxtaposition ~ Where there's smoke, there's fire
  • Horticultural circumflagellation ~ Beating around the bush
  • Hypoclimatosis ~ Under the weather
  • Lactoprofundant lachrymosis ~ Crying over spilled milk
  • Literolachrolepsy ~ Read 'em and weep
  • Monolithic biavicide ~ Killing two birds with one stone
  • Opticosimiomimicry ~ Monkey see, monkey do
  • Postoctoglobularity ~ Behind the eightball
  • Postovular gallinomics ~ Counting your chickens before they hatch
  • Scatoshinolepsy ~ Can't tell sh!t from Shinola
  • Simioavunculosis ~ I'll be a monkey's uncle
  • Superaquatic hemoviscosity ~ Blood is thicker than water
  • Terracircumflexion amorosa ~ Love makes the world go around
  • Vitrodomo non petrojecti ~ People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
Sit Vis Vobiscum (May the Force Be With You)

The great thing about academia is that they're trying to lose latinate language (i've been called on it a number of times in papers) while doctors are adding more for job security. Wonder which group is less confident :)

Lol, you can't argue with em about your diagnosis if you can't even pronounce it :)

My personal favorite is "orthostatic hypotension"

This is when you're sitting/lying for a while, and you stand up and get a little dizzy. it happens because your blood pools in your legs, then it can't get up to your head quickly enough.

Ortho is bones, static is, in doctor-speak, standing, i.e. standing upright. hypo is effectively "low" and tension is, in medical lingo, blood pressure. Orthostatic hypotension is then low blood pressure when standing.

If i were going to make a name for it, I'd call it "that crazy dizzy thing that happens when you stand up."

AndyHui was translating WW's thread title, baff. "Rideo Ergo Sum" = I laugh, therefore I am.

As a more brooding sort of person, I prefer the motto "Cogito Ergo Doleo."
I think, therefore I am depressed. ;)

On the subject of fancy schmancy Latin talk, here are a couple of lists that were passed around in my niece's Latin class recently:

THE SEVEN DWARFS

Dopey - Fatuus
Doc - Medicullus
Grumpy - Severus
Happy - Beatus
Sleepy - Somniculosus
Bashful - Verecundus
Sneezy - Sternuens

SANTA'S REINDEER

Bliltzen - Fulgens
Comet - Cometes
Cupid - Cupido
Dancer - Saltator
Dasher - Provolans
Donner - Tonitrus
Prancer - Exultans
Vixen - Vulpes
Rudolph the Red-Nosed - Rudolphus Naso Rubro
