You Leave your home in the woods on a dark and rainy day to buy some wood so that your fireplace wont go out. As you walk to your driveway you notice your black cat by its shiny medallion on its leather collar all wet meowing at you to feed it. So you continue on to the store and buy some cat food and the needed wood, on your return to the house you notice your cat dead in front of the fireplace; how did he die?

There are a billion different stories you could come up with that fit "everything" in your post.

You ran over it with your car, so that little biznatch won't be crossing your path any time soon, and the lightning hit the medalion and made the cat turn into a ghost that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

The wet leather collar stiffened in the warmth and strangled the cat. Due to the medallion it stiffen in a way such that the cat couldn't breathe.

Right, After you left, the cat got covered in the carbon monoxide from your exhaust, this didnt poison him however as he was wet (wetness lessens the effects of c/monoxide, hence putting wet rag over your mouth when your house is on fire), he didnt die then, but when he went inside the house where the fire was barely burning, the fresh mix of oxygen flooding into the room from outside caused a sudden flash, the extreme brightness and noise startled the cat so much his heart stopped, but he didnt burn due to the wetness of his fur and the c/monoxide stuck to it which also nullified the effect of the burning in the air so it didnt burn your house down.

there, used your facts in the story and gave you a perfectly reasonable answer to the riddle...hehe

I hate cats but have been trying so hard to fit in with my cat-loving neighbors, so the logical conclusion is just before I went off to the store, I finally came to my senses and killed the damn thing as I muttered, "to hell with the neighbors".
