Three guys go to a motel and get a room. The total charge is $30 and each guy pays $10. After they go to their room, the desk clerk and realizes that the special rate for tonight was $25 and that he overcharged them. He contacts the maid and gives her five $1 bills and asks her to reimburse the three guys. On her way, the maid wonders how shes going to distribute $5 with three guys. So she decides to secretly pocket $2 and pay them each $1.

In effect, each guy paid $9. Three times nine is $27 and after adding the $2 the maid pocketed makes $29.

What happened to the last dollar?

Old riddle. There are several explanations floating on the web and on AT if you look for them. The problem is in assuming each guy paid $9.

The real question is what are three guys doing in a hotel room...

everything adds up right.

$9 x 3 = $27 they paid.

$27 + $3 (total in their pockets) = $30.

-or look at it this way-

Desk clerk has $25

Maid has $2

3 guys have $3
-------------------
$30
